When you feel like dessert for breakfast-Bruges Waffles

A couple weekends ago, my sister and I decided to visit the Farmers Market downtown. It’s one of my favorite summer events. I don’t really cook, but I do love to people watch. We try to get there early to beat the heat and the excessive crowds. Neither of us had taken time to eat breakfast before our visit so we decided to visit the famous Bruges Waffles and Frites, located right across the street from Pioneer Park.

This little establishment is in no way a secret. Everyone knows about it and has either tried it or put it on their list of must-tries (we all have those lists, right?). Still, this was my first time there and it did not disappoint.

We both got a vanilla waffle with strawberries and creme fraiche (what they call their whipped cream). I was prepared for a sweet overload, but to my surprise it wasn’t overly sweet. The waffle was crisp and slightly caramelized on the outside and soft and chewy inside. The strawberries were ripe and the whipped cream was just sweet enough. I though for sure I’d feel like I’d need a three-mile run after a breakfast like this, but it was perfectly light and refreshing. Decadent, sure, but the freshness balanced it out nicely.

Next go around I’d like to try their frites. Because this girl LOVES her french fries!

  1. love LOVE the caramelized waffles at Bruges! There is nothing quite like them. The owner even told me once that they’ve stopped making them this traditional way in Belgium because it is such a a process to clean the waffle irons.
