Unhinged is definitely on my short list for favorite stores in Utah. In addition to simply having an awesome selection of clothing and gift items, the owner, Corey, is dedicated to providing space for local designers to have the opportunity to get their designs and product out in front of customers. How can you not love that?
The latest local designer pop-up at Unhinged is Hell Bent. Hell Bent is a line of refashioned thrift store clothing designed and created by Cardi, a woman with Utah roots and parents with a history in tailoring. Cardi’s refashioning career began in LA, where she started her jewelry line, Salvage LA, based on redesigned thrift and vintage jewelery. After moving back to Salt Lake City, she transitioned to taking thrift store clothing and transforming those items into new, wearable pieces.
I got to chat with Cardi at the event, who was completely charming and had perfectly effortless style (naturally). She said she started her refashioning as you might expect, restyling pieces for her own wardrobe. But it wasn’t long before she expanded to designing and selling her refashioned pieces.
You might think her secret lies in a knowledge of hidden thrift store gems around the area, but she said her favorite place to find supplies is Utah’s much-loved Deseret Industries. Turns out it just takes an eye for detail and design.
“You see a huge floral dress at the DI and think ‘no way’. But you can take that same dress and turn it into a tank top you’d actually wear.” – Cardi
As for inspiration for her pieces, sometimes it comes when you’d least expect it. For example, Cardi told me she was flipping through radio stations a little while ago and stopped on what she thought was NPR. Turns out it was a radical Christian talk show where the host was ranting about how women have no place in church. Cardi’s response?
“I just thought ‘F*ck you!’ and started designing clothing with upside-down crosses on them.”
Cardi also said one of the best things about having space at Unhinged is that Corey has given her free reign to stock whatever she wants in her space. Unhinged in Sugarhouse is currently the only place to find her pieces, and she plans on bringing in more items over the next few weeks. It’s definitely worth a look, so support local and check out Hell Bent and all the other local products at both Unhinged locations.
