I’d like to ask you a few questions. Do you like to read? Yes? Great. Do you like open discussions with members of your community? Yes? How do you feel about tea?
The Leonardo is hosting an ongoing book club, “Leo Lit: Exploring Feminism Through Books, Tea, and Talk.” Leo Lit is a way for the community to gather together and discuss issues relating to feminism and sexism. Everyone is welcome: women, men, dyed-in-the-wool feminists and those just looking to learn more. The founder, Amanda Hurtado, explains why she started it all.
“The Leonardo approached me in October 2013 with the idea of starting a feminist book club. I have organized a couple other events for feminist civic engagement in the past — a book club affiliated with Red Rockettes Recreational Roller Derby, and a 2-day film series for the AWP conference which focused on Voices of Indigenous, Immigrant and International Women. I learned a ton through my involvement in those projects. So when the Leo asked me to design a curriculum and lead these meetings, I felt very honored to have the opportunity to work with them on this project. I could not be more excited to help facilitate this community discussion about the issues surrounding sexism and to learn more about feminist movement past, present, and future.”
I was lucky enough to catch last month’s meeting and loved every second of it. Though the tea is optional (I’m sorry if I misled you) the Salt Bistro is open and food is more than welcome during the discussion.
If you are interested in discussing the issues facing today’s modern woman, this is the place to be. The books include everything from feminist theory to sci-fi novels. This month’s book is “Women, Race, and Class” by Angela Davis. Leo Lit meets on the third Thursday of every month at 7pm at the Leonardo. Just walk in and let them know you are there for the book club.
The book club is run on donations only, so all that you are required to bring is yourself and that gorgeous mind of yours.
Other questions? Post them in the comments section and I’ll give you any answers you need.
See you there!
