Do you ever feel like you’re somehow the last person to learn about something super cool? I felt like that times two while meeting a friend for drinks last Thursday. Not only was that the first time I’d ever checked out Garage on Beck but, more importantly, it was the first time ever hearing of Joe McQueen.
But seriously, how am I just now discovering Joe McQueen? This guy is a Utah legend and for good reason. He’s been performing for 80 years with legends such as Duke Ellington, Ray Charles, Nat King Cole, and Louis Armstrong. He’s been in Utah since 1945 when he came to play a week’s worth of gigs but ended up making Utah his home. How lucky are we?
Few things make bars as enjoyable as live music. And hearing Joe McQueen sing Georgia On My Mind was next level. It’s not hard for me to develop crushes. You may remember my winter farmer’s market crush, Rino. Well, my crush on Joe is strong and real. Even the parking ticket I got while there couldn’t ruin my evening. He seems to play at the Garage the first Thursday of every month. So, you can guess where I’ll be. Drinking red wine, snacking on deep fried funeral potatoes, and crushing hard on Joe McQueen.
